The Sociologist and The Historian

A joint publication with Raison d’agir and Ina éditions

In 1988, the historian Roger Chartier received sociologist Pierre Bourdieu on France Culture for a series of five interviews. This book reproduces the complete version of all five, with a preface by Roger Chartier, who fills in the intellectual and political context of the time.
In a conversation where their intellectual closeness coupled with a clear awareness of their differences are both apparent, the sociologist and the historian tackle the progress and problems of their respective disciplines and their role in society. Together they examine the confusions and illusions put out by intellectual soothsayers that create an obstacle to the liberating role of sociology and history. Thirty years later their statements remain as fresh and relevant as they were then.
The following subjects are treated in these interviews in a particularly clear, concise and didactic form:
– The presentation of certain basic concepts of Bourdieu’s thinking, especially that of “habitus” and “field”;
– Some extremely pertinent responses (even today) to recurring objections to his so-called determinism, the clashes (albeit false) between subjectivism and objectivism or the individual and society etc., and to the judgement so often levelled at him that he tries to replace the words of the dominated with his own erudite discourse.

Pierre Bourdieu (1930 – 2002) was a sociologist and Professor at the Collège de France. From the 1960s on, his books (Les Héritiers / The Inheritors, La Distinction / Distinction, La Misère du monde / The Weight of the World, etc.) and lectures have played a major part in the intellectual and political life of France.

Roger Chartier (born 1945), historian and Professor at the Collège de France, is one of the founders of the history of books and reading (Les Origines culturelles de la Révolution française/ The Cultural Origins of the French Revolution, Histoire de l’édition française/ A History of Publishing in France, Inscrire et effacer / Inscription and Deletion, etc.) For a long time he ran a radio show called Les Lundis de l’histoire [History on Monday] on France-Culture.
